Weekly Update

2G Families,
With one week to go before Winter Break, students are beginning to feel the excitement.  Just a quick reminder to check on the edline website, https://www.edline.net for future posts.  Please try it out this week and let me know if you have any problems logging in.  All of the log in information was sent out earlier this year.

Reading:
Keep reading and recording minutes for the month of December.  Don't forget to keep it oging over Winter Break.  I apologize that bus riders did not bring home a reading book on Friday.  I did remember in time for the rest of the students to pack their books before they left. 

             Secret Life of Trees

Your child is reading The Secret Life of Trees, by Chiara Chevallier. This nonfiction selection discusses the life cycle of a tree and explains that trees can be home to many different animals, including birds and insects. This selection also discusses the two main types of trees – broad-leaved trees and conifers—and explores trees that grow in tropical climates.

Please encourage your child to read The Secret Life of Trees over the weekend. Vocabulary Power precedes the story.

Writing:

Students are working on different forms of poetry, based on a winter theme.  They recently completed a shape poem and will begin work on an acrostic poem.

Math:

This week we will be starting Unit 5:  2D Shapes.  A family letter describing the unit will go home with students tomorrow.  Listed below is a brief overview of the unit.

• Vocabulary: digit, numerals, value, compare, hundreds, attributes, addend, sum, 

  difference, array, equation, multiplication, equal, pentagon, hexagon, quadrilaterals,   

  rows, column.
• Strategies for addition and subtraction
• All sums of two one-digit numbers.

Science/Health:

We are continuing our nutrition unit with the help of the dragon, Little D.  Students have covered all 5 food groups and will begin work on a Power Point Food Riddle.

Please read the letter below which describes the plans for our upcoming holiday party.

Dear Parents,

On Friday, December 21, we will be holding our holiday parties from 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. for all our students.  Two room parents or their designees will run the parties for the children.  Due to space limitations, we ask that you refrain from attending these parties. 

The PTA will be providing the students with cupcakes and a Capri Sun during the party.  The cupcakes are from * Whole Foods Market in Naperville.  The ingredients are as follows for the cupcakes: vanilla cupcakes contain eggs, milk, soy and wheat, sugar, enriched wheat flour, dry egg whites, palm oil, leavening, dextrose, modified food starch, dry egg yolk, natural flavor, salt, non-fat milk solids, sorbitan monostearate, soy lecithin, soybean oil, cellulose gum, xanthan gum, water, and canola oil.  The frosting consists of powdered sugar, palm oil shortening, unsalted butter, vanilla extract, sea salt and annatto (natural plant based food color). 

If your child is unable to have the treat provided because of allergies, please send the school nurse a note informing us of this no later than Thursday, December 13, 2012.  She needs to compile a list of what students cannot have the cupcakes.  You are asked to provide your child with a treat that he/she can have if they have allergies to the cupcakes being served. 

Please do not send in any other treats for the classrooms because of possible food allergies.  Treats brought to school will be sent home.

Finally, alternative activities will be planned for children whose families choose not to participate in this event beginning at 2:30 p.m.  Please contact Mr. LeCrone through email in order that appropriate activities can be arranged no later than Monday, December 17, 2012.  His email address is:  brian_lecrone@ipsd.org.

As a reminder, winter break begins on Friday, December 21, and classes will resume on Monday, January 7, 2013.

With just two weeks before Winter Break begins, I would like to touch base on a couple of important items.  Over the break, I plan to begin using the edline website to post my class blog updates.  Some classes have already made the transition and all teachers will be using it by next fall.  Information on how to access the site was provided earlier this year. 

Also, as we are approaching the halfway point of the school year, students are starting to run low on supplies.  We use dry erase markers on a daily basis, and many are running out.  Please check in with your child and see what they need.  Thanks!

Continue to read and record on maywattsreads on a daily basis.  Our class numbers dropped a bit last month and as a result our alien friend, Invader is now in another classroom.  Keep reading and recording to bring him back!

We will be completing Unit 4 this week. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the standards with a Transfer Task on Thursday and a Math Assessment on Friday.

Science:

Health & Nutrition

We have been discussing the 5 food groups, and how each group nourishes our bodies, over the past week. So far we have learned about the Milk Group.  Be sure to check out the food and nutrtion website links under Science.

Handwriting:

Over the past week I have been assessing your child’s pencil grip. It is hard to break old habits, however, correct grip will enhance your child’s ability to write legibly. Please encourage your child to use the tripod grip, even though it may feel awkward while retraining muscles from old habits to new.

2G Families,

The May Watts 2^nd Graders had a wonderful time at our field trip to the Tivoli Theater this week. Through art, science and technology, the characters of The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and the Hare came to life! All of the puppets were lined with electroluminescent wire (EL wire) which glowed in the dark. The performance was spectacular! I would like to thank Dr. Beris, Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Sundararajan for chaperoning our field trip.

 
Recently, there have been more student absence due to vacations.  If you know in advance that your child will be absent, please email me the dates and also contact the office.  Students should continue to read, but other assignments and/or tests will be made up when they return.  Thanks for your cooperation.

Reading:
Scholastic book orders for December and the Holiday Gift Issue went home last week.  All orders are due by Wednesday morning.  Please consider using the scholastic website to place your orders.  The books will arrive in time to be distributed before Winter Break starts.

Continue to read and record on the maywattsreads website on a daily basis.  We had a strong class performance for the month of November and will begin working towards our December goal.  We will find out later this week if our alien friends will be staying in our classroom!  Teachers have been discussing their favorite childhood books on The Captain’s Log. When your child is logging in his/her daily minutes, take a look at the favorite childhood book discussion.

Our current story is listed below.  Students have enjoyed playing the synonym game, called Walk the Plank.  The link is listed to the right under Reading Target Skills.

Health and Nutrition Unit

This week your child will begin learning about healthy eating with the Royal Food Family and Little D the dragon. To grow and be healthy we need to eat foods from all five food groups. We will be discussing each of the 5 food groups during the next several weeks.

What should a healthy meal include?

Why is exercise important for good health?

Technology

Students have been working on keyboarding skills.  Correct finger placement on the home row keys (pointer fingers on f and j) has been emphasized. Please keep practicing at home so your child will be able to use good keyboarding skills on upcoming projects.

Field Trip to Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove on Thursday, 11/29:
Please return all permission forms and payment by Monday, 11/26.  I will contact parents who have volunteered to chaperone on Monday.  Please remember that there will be no hot lunch program available on the day of the field trip because of the times we will be gone.  You will also need to provide your child with a drink as milk will also not be available.

Writing:

Students will begin work on the final copy of their Slice of Life Persaonal Narrative on Monday.  A home extension of this writing activity could be generated with events and activities from this holiday weekend.

Social Studies:

We will continue with our History Unit.  The focus will be on  the Thirteen  Colonies and Westward Expansion. 

Math:

We will begin Unit 4 on Monday.  The main focus will be on addition and subtraction within 100, and applying this to words problems and measurement.  A new math homework sheet will go home on Monday.

Read In Day!
On Tuesday, 11/20/12, 2nd Grade will be having a We Are Thankful For Books READ-IN-DAY.  Please bring a sturdy bag with the following items to school with you:
1) Several (5-7) of your favorite books to read.
2) A flashlight or book light for "lights out" reading.
3) An extra, healthy snack.

Field Trip to Tivoli Theater
Permission slips went home Friday for our upcoming Field Trip to the Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove on Thursday, 11/29.  We will be seeing a performance of "The Ugly Ducking" and "The Tortoise and the Hare".  Forms and payment, in the form of a check made payable to MAY WATTS SCHOOL are due no later than Monday, 11/26.  It would be helpful if they could be returned before we leave for Thanksgiving Break.  We will be in need of three parent chaperones to accompany our classs on the trip.  If you're interested in volunteering, please note this on the permission form.  In the event we have more than 3 parents offering to help, I will do a drawing.  Parent chaperones will be notified by Monday, 11/26. 

Reading:
Continue to read and record daily on the maywattsreads website.  Our alien friends are enjoying a stay in our classroom and students are hoping to keep them for another month.  It takes a group effort from all students.
Students have been reading the play, Johnny Appleseed and will be acting it out on Tuesday.  Please make sure students return their Reading Book on Monday.

Writing:
Students have completed their rough draft of their Slice of Life, Personal Narrative.  The next step will be peer and teacher editing conferences to revise their work.  Final copies will be completed after we return from Thanksgiving Break.

Math:
We will be wrapping up Unit 3 with a review on Monday and test on Tuesday.  We have covered concepts in time, money, data collection and addition.

Social Studies:
Students learned about different Native American tribes and presented their findings as part of a group project presentation.  Students displayed their creative sides in their poster designs.  From here, we will continue forward with the history of our country, beginning with the Revolutionary War.

Thank you for taking the time to come in and learn about your child's progress during Parent/Teacher Conference Week. 
It's been an exciting week in 2G!  The first good news came when our class was announced not only the grade level winner, but the entire school winner for the highest number of students reaching their goal in the school reading program for the month of October!  We are know privileged to host two aliens in our classroom for the next month.  Keep reading and recording so we can have a repeat performance in November.
We have also filled our marble jar with our responsible, respectful and safe choices.  We will be celebrating with crazy hair day on Friday.

Seeing how sad Mr. Putter has become, Tabby rubs against his leg to cheer him up. Mr. Putter tries once more to fly the plane, and this time he succeeds.

Thank you for sending in a photograph with your child.  Students are sharing their photos and brainstorming ideas for their personal narrative.  The photos are a great starting point.

Social Studies History Unit        Essential Questions:  1.  Who were the first people to live in America? 2.  Who were the first people to travel to America? 3.  Why did the colonists go to war with England? 4.  How did our country change? 5.  What was the major cause of the Civil War? 6.  How have special Americans and holidays made a difference in the United States? 7. How do maps reflect the changes in America’s expansion?

Please remember to sign and return your child's report card envelope on Monday.  I'm looking forward to meeting with parents to discuss your child's progress on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday.  Thank you for completing the parent homework to provide your input for the conferences.

Also, an email was sent out regading photo retakes on November 15th.  Please contact the office if you're interested.

Writing:

Next week students will be using a photograph during a unit of study in our Writing Workshop.  I am asking that each child bring in one photograph to class by Wednesday, 11/7.  The photograph should be a candid shot of a special memory in your child's life.  It does not have to be a momentous occasion or event.  However, it should be special and recent enough that your child rememebers the details of the memory.

Once you and your child decide on a photograph, I would suggest that the two of you talk about the photograph.  Talk about the who, what, when, where...as well as any other details about the memory.    Do not create a list but instead have a conversation.  If you realize your child can't remember much without your help, then perhaps it's not a good photograph for this lesson. 

Please label the photograph with your child's name and send it in an envelope.  Please DO NOT email electronic photos.  Photos will be returned after we complete this unit of study.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Math:

We will continue to use the new homework format, with a new sheet of problems going home on Monday.  Place value has been our target skill for the past week and I've added some of the games we played in class under the math links.  Please check them out.  Next week, we will focus on time.

Reading:

2G finished the month of October with every student meeting their reading goal!  Rewards will be coming home soon.  Keep reading and recording your minutes for the month of November.

Beginning this week, your child will be bringing home a math homework sheet for the week.  Please look for this sheet and a letter of explanation in your child's home folder this Monday.

Writing:

This week your child has been writing a paragraph about his/her favorite place.  Starting with a picture and a four square organizer, students were able to brainstorm and organize reasons and details about this place.  From there, we did student editing conferences and finally a teacher editing conference.  You will see the final product at conferences.

Technology:

We are currently working on keyboarding skills in the computer lab.  Keyboarding skills will be of great importance as we work on writing projects in the computer lab.  Please encourage your child to practice his/her keyboarding skills at home using one of the websites under the technology section to the right.

Tomorrow students will be going home with two important handouts.  One will be a parent homework sheet requesting your input prior to parent teacher conferences next month.  Please complete the form and return it to school by Monday, 10/29.  The other paper provides information on how to access Edline, a site that District 204 schools are using for school and class organization.  Please keep the log in infomation in a safe place, as the class blog will eventually be moving to this new site.  In the meantime, there is a link from the Edline site to 2G's blog.

May Watts LMC Reading Incentive Program:

The 2nd Grade Team is asking each student to read for 300 minutes per month (10-15 minutes each night).
Once your child has recorded his/her reading minutes, I am able to see the progress report. Please encourage your child to record his/her reading minutes each night.

Writing Unit of Study: Paragraphs

In this Unit of Study, students will learn how to develop a paragraph using proper form. They will learn that a paragraph has a topic sentence (main idea), supporting ideas (reasons and details), and a summary (ending sentence). Students will have opportunities to write numerous paragraphs throughout this unit. 

Science:

We are continuing our Unit of Study about The Water Cycle. The essential questions of this unit include:

1. What are the stages of the water cycle?
2. What is evaporation?
3. What is condensation?
4. What is precipitation?
5. What is accumulation?
6. How do these stages work together in the water cycle?

Math:

I would like to thank you for your patience as the 2^nd Grade Team works through the new Common Core State Standards for Math. I hope you had a chance to read the letter that was sent home last week explaining the changes to the math curriculum. 

Beginning with Unit 3 (at the end of this week) you will receive a Family Resource Guide at the outset of each unit. This guide will outline what your child should learn along with the skills that are taught in the unit.

Conference reminder letters will be going home with students on Wednesday.  Please review your date/time and send back the bottom portion with your child.  Wednesday is also an early dismissal day, with students leaving at 12:15

Reading:
Students should be reading 15 minutes daily at home and recording on the maywattsreads website.  The second grade goal is 300 minutes. 
Please have your child reread Days with Frog and Toad in their reading book this weekend and review vocabulary flashcards with them.  There will be a test over this story on Monday.  It is important that students return their reading book each Monday.

This week we will be looking at what a well-organized paragraph looks and sounds like. We will begin by reviewing the 1^st grade paragraph organizer that the students used last year. Then, we will begin adding details which is a transition into 2^nd grade writing.

Science:

We are studying the water cycle and students have participated in experiments involving evaporation and condensation.  Ask your child to sing the water cycle song to you, complete with hand motions!

Math:

A letter explaining the changes made to the math curriculum/state standards will be going home on Monday.  Please take the time to read this important letter.  We are continuing to work with addition and subtraction facts, using fact families to help students see their relationship to each other.  Students were introduced to an organizer sheet that they will be asked to use when solving a word problem, also referred to as a transfer task.  This step will help students find the important information and a method to help them get to the correct answer.  Students need to be able to explain or show their thinking.  Next month, students will be going home with a word problem to solve for homework each week.  More information will be coming.

Next week, students will be taking the first in a series of interim testing.  A letter to explain the testing was sent home to families last week.  Testing will take place during the morning, Tuesday-Friday.  Please refrain from scheduling appointments for your child during these times.  These are not tests that students can prepare for in advance.

...or you can visit the May Watts website under (Educational Enrichment section) to find the link and examples of art presentations.  You can make up your own presentation and art project for the designated artist and art work, or you can use a presentation that our team has created.  Art is not one dimensional as there are so many ways to view it and appreciate it!  Our goal is to provide an interactive exposure to important works of art that have made a big impact on the world!

 

All you need to do is email the teacher to set up what day and time of the month you will present (usually about 45 minutes where you speak for 5 minutes or so and the students work on an interactive art project the remainder of the time).  We have supplies in the PTA closet as well as Artists Packets you can check out to familiarize yourself with the artist (paint/clay/oil pastels/charcoal/art paper/mixed media) and/or you can also bring in anything you wish for supplies too!  

 

This is a great opportunity to present to your child's classroom and help enrich May Watts Students with great works of art!

K-2 family fitness night  is Wednesday,October 10th. Kdg is 6-6:45 and 1st and 2nd is 6:45-7:30.  We will be doing locomotors, ball skills, and fitness.  Parents and students need to wear comfortable clothes and PE shoes.

 

The May Watts LMC is offering the opportunity to order a selection of Ivy+Bean autographed books. They include a choice of both hardcover and paperbacks. If ordered, the books will be personalized and autographed by author, Annie Barrows when she comes to visit third graders next Thursday. If you're interested in ordering, there is a link to an order form on the May Watts homepage. 

 

Scholastic book orders were placed this weekend and should be arriving in a week or two.  Please remember to have your child read for 15 minutes each day and record on the online website:  www.maywattsreads.com  Second grade students are expected to read 300 minutes each month. 

 

PLEASE RETURN READING BOOK WITH YOUR CHILD ON TUESDAY...WE WILL NEED IT FOR THE NEXT READING LESSON. 

Please encourage your child to read Frog and Toad over the weekend. This can count towards their 15 minutes of daily reading.  Vocabulary Power precedes the story.
