May Watts Reading Incentive Program:
I am thrilled to see how many students have been reading diligently at home. Please remember to continue recording minutes read on the May Watts Reads site. October reading minutes will be ending on the last day of October, so please make sure your child has updated his/her reading log by the end of that day.
Reading:
Please make sure that your child returns his/her reading book on Monday. Students will be taking a test on The Enormous Turnip and then we will start our next story, Mr. Putter and Tabby.
Your child will be reading Mr. Putter and Tabby Fly the Plane by Cynthia Rylant. In this story, Mr. Putter, an elderly man who loves toys, buys a radio-controlled toy plane. He hopes to fly it because he has always wanted to fly a plane, but he has never had the opportunity to do so. His cat, Tabby, is not happy because toys that move make her nervous. Mr. Putter tries three times to fly his new plane, without success. These failures make Mr. Putter sad, and he declares that old men shouldn’t have toys. Seeing how sad Mr. Putter has become, Tabby rubs against his leg to cheer him up. Mr. Putter tries once more to fly the plane, and this time he succeeds.

Vocabulary Power:

Math:
Beginning this week, your child will be bringing home a math homework sheet for the week. Please look for this sheet and a letter of explanation in your child's home folder this Monday.
Writing:
This week your child has been writing a paragraph about his/her favorite place. Starting with a picture and a four square organizer, students were able to brainstorm and organize reasons and details about this place. From there, we did student editing conferences and finally a teacher editing conference. You will see the final product at conferences.
Technology:
We are currently working on keyboarding skills in the computer lab. Keyboarding skills will be of great importance as we work on writing projects in the computer lab. Please encourage your child to practice his/her keyboarding skills at home using one of the websites under the technology section to the right.
