The Family Science Night is this Wednesday, October 3rd between 6:30pm and 8:30pm. Our goal in Science Night is to increase students' exposure to, and opportunities to do hands-on science. There is a fee $5/per family. You may still turn in the form sent out by the PTA if you have it. We will still accept walk-ins on the day of the event. Families just need to bring with them enthusiasm and spirit to enjoy the event!
Reading:
The reading incentive program, Reading Stars, is up and running. Our class learned how to access the program and record their reading minutes during their LMC time. All students will participate. The second grade goal is 300 minutes each month. Students can log in by using their student id and our class (2G) as a password. Student id numbers were on a blue brochure that families received at Curriculum Night. If families were not present, they were sent home the next day with students. If you can't locate it, please let me know and I can email you your child's id number. You can access the program through the website: www.maywattsreads.com or throught the May Watts LMC Blog.
There will be a test on the story Henry & Mudge on Monday. Please review vocabulary words using book/and flashcards that went home on Friday. The flashcards can stay at home, but please return the book on Monday. Also your child should reread the story and be familiar with the setting, characters and events.
Your child is reading Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon by Cynthia Rylant. In this story, a boy and his dog go for long walks through the woods in the fall. Although each has his own way of doing things, they both love spending time together.
Please encourage your child to read Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon over the weekend. Vocabulary Power precedes the story.

Talk with your child about things people like to do with their pets. You may be able to find these stories about people and their pets in your local library. Harry the Dirty Dog, by Gene Zion, Henry and Mudge Take the Big Test, by Cynthia Rylant, Arthur’s Pet Business, by Marc Brown.
Social Studies:
We are finishing up our unit on maps and globes. Students who did not finish their map game in class last week, took them home to finish up. We will be sharing the games next week. If your child would like to bring game pieces from home for their games, please send them in a labeled baggie on Monday.
Math:
I will be updating the left side of the blog with assignments that will help reinforce foundational concepts. Some activities will be from lessons we covered in class that day and some will be review skills.
Writing:
We will be working on paragraph writing. The four square format will be used to help students organize their paragraphs.
